Volunteer Hits 48 States

Call it Extreme Volunteering:

Thirty-one year old Idaho man Drew Johnson packed up his backpack late last year, and set off to travel the world, volunteering in 48 states over 48 weeks.  Sometimes he sets up service activities in advance, sometimes he just shows up and does what need to be done, like his trip to flood-stricken Nashville, where he mucked debris out of people’s homes.

Blogging all the way, Drew is on a mission to promote what he calls the “Service to Others” lifestyle, which he lays out on his website.  Sometimes he sleeps in his car, and sometimes community residents are so moved by his assistance that they offer him a place to sleep and a hot meal.

Drew’s cross-country service mission might be too hard-core for most of us, but reading his blog of what he’s up to on any given day is not only inspiring and eye-opening, but also educational as I learn about all the volunteer opportunities, nonprofits, and people in need across our country.  Check it out if you need a pick-me-up.

Go, Drew!
