It’s My Birthday and I’ll…
…Donate if I want to.
Yes, your friendly neighborhood blog author is having a birthday today! Woot!
So in the spirit of being born and all, I think it’s only appropriate to showcase a really cool fundraising idea that ties into (you guessed it) birthdays. If you haven’t yet heard of Charity: Water, they bring clean, safe drinking water to people in developing nations. There are a billion people who need it and don’t have it. Enter Charity: Water to save the day.
Their annual September fundraising campaign is freakishly cool – each September they ask people with a September birthday to “donate their birthday” as a fundraiser for Charity: Water. Instead of getting gifts, you ask friends to give you $1 for every year of your life. So for me, that’d be… $18.
So it’s ALMOST September, and not too late to participate if you have a September birthday right around the corner and think this is a cool idea. But the idea can really apply to any cause you love! I remember being in junior high school and having a good friend of mine want nothing more for her birthday than to adopt the Golden Lion Tamarind monkeys at the Brookfield Zoo. And that’s junior high school, folks – the most selfish time of life!
So think about what you might be willing to give up in order to celebrate not just your life, but the lives of others who could use your generosity. What a great way to honor yourself.
